Project Description

This project aims to address gender expertise capacity gaps within the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) by supporting two MINUSMA gender advisors located in regional offices. The armed conflict in Mali has had a dramatic impact on women and children contributing to an increased need to fully incorporate gender considerations at all levels. Integrating gender considerations as well as promoting and implementing the Women Peace and Security (WPS) Agenda are part of the MINUSMA mandate and are necessary for a more effective peace operation.

Expected Results

The expected outcome for this project includes the improved implementation of the WPS mandate across all MINUSMA functions and components in Mali.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of March 2021 include: (1) improved implementation of the Women Peace and Security mandate across all functions of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA); (2) the gender advisors organized 20 sensitization sessions with women’s associations on gender and gender-based violence and the involvement of women in peace processes; (3) organized 10 capacity building workshops on gender-based violence and the involvement of women in the peace and reconciliation process; (4) organized four sensitizations sessions on social cohesion and the electoral process for women; and (5) contributed to the development of social standards in terms of gender equality in rural communities in the Ségou and SAN regions targeting 400 beneficiaries for two months with the Association Malienne Survie au Sahel.
