Project Description

This project aims to enhance growth and reduce poverty improve quality of life and social well-being and improve governance and accountability in Tanzania for the benefit of all Tanzanians by supporting the implementation of the Government of Tanzania’s National Strategy for Growth and the Reduction of Poverty. Project activities include: (1) increasing agricultural production building roads expanding the capacity of the major port and railways and broadening the reach of the electrical grid; (2) training and deploying more qualified teachers and health workers along with the supplies needed to do their jobs; and (3) broadening the tax base and improving citizens’ access to information such as budget documents. As with all budget support initiatives Canada is working in close cooperation with other donors and the Government of Tanzania to strengthen its aid effectiveness by focussing on effective transparent and accountable country systems; increasing donor coordination and harmonization; and strengthening mutual accountability. Budgetary support also fosters greater policy dialogue among DFATD government and partners thus helping to strengthen efforts for effective focussed aid as well as long-term development results. This initiative is continuously monitored and evaluated in coordination with other donors.

Expected Results

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) improved enabling environment for sustainable economic growth particularly in the extractive sectors; (2) improved geographic and gender equitable delivery of quality education and health services particularly for women and children; and (3) improved management of public finances by the Government of Tanzania at all levels.
