Project Description
This grant represents Canada’s institutional support to the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) for the period 2016-2018. IFAD uses these funds together with other donor funding to achieve its mandate. IFAD’s mandate is to enable poor rural people especially smallholder farmers to achieve food security and nutrition overcome poverty and become resilient especially to the effects of climate change. IFAD delivers country-specific solutions increasing the rural poor's access to agricultural technologies financial services markets land and other natural resources. It provides highly concessional loans and grants to developing countries and is currently financing projects in 96 low and middle-income countries and Gaza and the West Bank. Canada’s support to IFAD contributes to improving the lives of the rural poor notably smallholder farmers many of whom are women.
Expected Results
Expected outcomes include: (1) increased capacities of rural women and men including young people to implement sustainable agricultural practices; (2) increased use of new and improved technologies for sustainable smallholder agriculture; (3) enhanced environmental sustainability and resilience in smallholder agriculture; enhanced linkages of smallholder farmers to agricultural value chains; and (4) increased capacity of financial institutions to provide a broad range of inclusive services to poor rural people.
