Project Description
This project aims to collect information about international money transfers from residents of Canada to relatives or friends outside Canada. The Study on International Money Transfers is being conducted by Statistics Canada with the support of Global Affairs Canada. The information collected in this study aims to help guide policies and programs to help lower the costs to send money outside Canada and allow for safer more reliable money transfers.
Expected Results
The expected outcome for this project is that Canadians and the Government of Canada have access to up-to-date information on remittances including the costs associated with transferring money outside Canada and the methods people living in Canada use to send money internationally.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of May 2019 include: (1) completion of the collection of data (survey) for the Study on International Money Transfers (SIMT) from Canada took place from April to July 2018. Approximately 23 000 respondents born in Official Development Assistance (ODA) eligible countries filled out a questionnaire for this survey; (2 ) an analytical report was produced which included data on remittance (money transfers) flows consumer behaviours and needs a list of countries receiving the money transfers (countries located in Africa Americas East and Southeast Asia South Asia and other ODA recipient countries) and tables with gender disaggregated data; and (3) key findings of the SIMT survey were released in “The Daily" Statistics Canada’s official release bulletin and the SIMT analytical report was posted on the Statistic Canada web site on April 17 2019 (https://www150.statcan.gc.ca/n1/pub/89-657-x/89-657-x2019007-eng.pdf).
