Project Description

November 2016 – Lebanon continues to be dramatically affected by the crisis in neighbouring Syria. Lebanon is currently hosting over 1 million Syrian refugees adding to the existing Palestinian and Iraqi refugees thus making Lebanon the country with the highest number of refugees per capita in the world. This influx has caused an enduring strain on host communities and the country’s ability to provide a number of essential services such as health education water and housing. Conflict-affected households are becoming increasingly vulnerable as poverty and food insecurity levels are increasing. With GAC’s support Oxfam Québec is providing water sanitation and hygiene (WASH) protection and livelihoods initiatives benefitting up to 8 793 vulnerable Syrian refugees and Lebanese citizens. Project activities include: (1) connecting Informal Tented Settlements (ITS) to the public water supply network or safe boreholes; (2) linking vulnerable jobseekers with apprenticeships and job opportunities that match their skills and preferences; (3) providing information on access to services support schemes as well as administrative procedures and access to rights; and (4) working with local authorities grassroots organisations and community support structures to strengthen local protection capacities.

Expected Results

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) improved and sustainable access to safe water and WASH facilities for families in under-served settlements; (2) increased access to income generation opportunities particularly for youth and women; and (3) expanded and strengthened community-based and local capacities for improving refugees and civilians’ access to basic services and protection of rights. The expected ultimate outcome is lives saved suffering alleviated and human dignity maintained in countries experiencing humanitarian crises or that are food insecure.
