Project Description

This project contributes to improving the management capacity of the African Union Commission (AUC) and to advancing continental integration and collaboration to reduce poverty in Africa priority sectors for Canada such as: trade; climate change; governance; and gender equality. The African Union Commission is the secretariat for the African Union (AU). The AU is Africa’s premier political organization and leading decision-making body for Africa’s political social and economic development. The project strengthens the planning capabilities of the AUC enhance operational efficiency and effectiveness and improve financial management and internal controls. By strengthening the AUC’s administrative operations this project contributes to the AUC’s efforts to promote peace and development through regional integration and collaboration. The project also supports selected departments of the AUC to elaborate and implement strategies and programs which promote trade integration address climate change and promote good governance human rights and gender equality on the continent.

Expected Results

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) improved management capacity and service delivery of the AUC in support of its efforts to promote peace and development on the continent; and (2) advanced continental integration and collaboration to reduce poverty in Africa in priority sectors such as empowerment of women and girls governance and human rights renewable energy and climate change and trade integration and sustainable resource management.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of March 2018 include: (1) the development of the new African Union Commission Mid-Term Plan 2018-2023; (2) the planning of results-based management training for the African Union Commission's staff; (3) the increased awareness of the African Union Member States on gender mainstreaming; (4) the development of the African Union Commission's Strategy on Women's Engagement in Electoral Processes in Africa; and (5) the evaluation of the Campaign on the Accelerated Reduction of Maternal Mortality in Africa. Overall these have contributed to the improvement of the management capacity and service delivery of the African Union Commission as well as the advancement of continental integration and collaboration to reduce poverty in Africa in priority sectors such as women and girls' empowerment governance and human rights renewable energy and climate change and trade integration and sustainable resource management.
