Project Description

This project supports Jordanian municipalities hosting significant numbers of refugees in delivering services and promoting employment opportunities to foster social resilience. Project activities include: (1) improving infrastructure and services that benefit all women and men in the community; (2) creating labour-intensive employment for both Syrians and Jordanians; and (3) providing technical assistance and training to municipalities to improve inclusive governance practices mainly to engage and respond to the needs of women and youth.

Expected Results

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) improved access to quality essential services and employment opportunities for 2.5 million Jordanians and 500 000 Syrians in 21 municipalities highly affected by the influx of Syrian refugees; and (2) improved governance of inclusive municipal services in the targeted host communities.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of March 2024 include: (1) improved access to quality essential services and employment opportunities in 21 municipalities benefitting over 2.8M people (22% Syrian and 45% women). The project enabled the creation of 45 000 person-days of employment through labour-intensive public works including road improvements; (2) rehabilitated and paved 1.1 million square meters of public roads with two compactors procured and operationalized. This includes the installation of 1 200 public lighting units thereby achieving the target; (3) completed and operationalized 4 100 square meters of public buildings and12 000 square meters of public leisure spaces; (4) improved local governance of inclusive municipal services in 21 target communities; and (5) delivered 27 sub-projects following extensive community engagement on needs and project ideas.
