Project Description

This project is a contribution to the joint donor Education Sector Support Fund (FASE) which supports the Ministry of Education and Human Development to provide children and adults in Mozambique with access to quality education and literacy programs so that they learn and succeed in their education. Canada is one of nine donors to FASE. This project enables the education ministry to implement annual activities such as: (1) constructing approximately 500 classrooms; (2) providing school grants/resources to over 13 000 schools; (3) providing approximately 13 million textbooks; (4) training 6 500 teachers; (5) supporting district and provincial authorities to supervise school operations and management; (6) providing adult literacy programs; and (7) implementing sexual and reproductive health and HIV/AIDS prevention programs in schools.

Expected Results

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) improved access to education for over 6.5 million school-aged children half of whom are girls; (2) improved quality of education for over 6.5 million girls and boys; and (3) improved sexual and reproductive health and rights for girls in the education system including reduced gender-based violence in schools.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of December 2019 include: (1) increased primary school access for up to grade six children by 6.9 million (of whom 3.335 million are girls) with the addition of 1 898 classrooms; (2) the quality of education improved from 93% in 2006 by providing school grants and resources to all primary schools in 2018 and 2019; (3) provided 15 million textbooks in 2019 bringing the total to 71.8 million since 2015; (4) trained 5 748 teacher graduates (of whom 50.3% are women) in 2019 bringing the total to 27 341 since 2016; (5) trained 1 643 school directors (of whom 463 are women) in 2019 bringing the total trained to 6 843; and (6) provided adult literacy training to 212 968 youth and adults (of which 138 754 were women).
