Project Description

This project aims to support a sustainable future peace in Syria by enabling an accountability process which addresses crimes that have been committed throughout the conflict. The Commission for International Justice and Accountability (CIJA) is determined to achieve justice in the absence of an international court or tribunal with jurisdiction over Syria. CIJA employs its unique criminal investigative capacity to build a strong foundation for future transitional justice processes.

Expected Results

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased capacity of Syrian investigators: mentoring and capacity-building efforts targeting Syrian investigators in the field of war crimes investigations are maintained and reinforced; (2) prosecution dossiers delivered: development of five new international-level legal cases related to Syria and continued CIJA tracking and cyber analysis of migrating suspects; (3) enhanced support to national/international authorities and the International Impartial and Independent Mechanism (IIIM). Requests for assistance from national and international authorities will be addressed; relationships with stakeholders in the transitional justice sector strengthened and further developed; and investigative evidentiary and analytical support provided to the IIIM.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of the end of the project (March 2019) include: (1) advanced 39 Regime crime teams and Daesh crime team members capacity to collect complex evidence; (2) received 153 requests (of which 77 Regime and 76 Daesh); and (3) 122 responded to two individuals suspected of committing crimes in Syria were prosecuted.
