Project Description
March 2018 – Following the outbreak of violence in Northern Rakhine State in August 2017 more than 671 000 Rohingya crossed from Myanmar into Bangladesh over a period of several months. Many have arrived exhausted and traumatised and are now living in difficult conditions in camps and settlements. These new arrivals have joined more than 200 000 Rohingya already in the district of Cox’s Bazar following earlier waves of displacement. With GAC’s support the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA Canada) is helping to respond to the immediate needs of refugees in Cox’s Bazar with a particular focus on women with children under 5 years of age girls boys the elderly and persons with special needs. Activities include: (1) providing gender-responsive shelter kits and tools; (2) providing dignity kits and essential household items such as blankets and mosquito nets; (3) promoting hygiene and health; and (4) providing child friendly spaces and safe spaces for women and girls.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased access to emergency shelters and critical non-food items; (2) increased awareness of critical environment-friendly sanitation hygiene and health practices; and (3) increased access to child-friendly and women and girls safe spaces. The expected ultimate outcome is reduced suffering maintained human dignity and lives saved among conflict-affected Rohingya refugees particularly the most vulnerable groups.
