Project Description
November 2016 – Lebanon continues to be dramatically affected by the crisis in neighbouring Syria. Lebanon is currently hosting over 1 million Syrian refugees adding to the existing Palestinian and Iraqi refugees thus making Lebanon the country with the highest number of refugees per capita in the world. This influx has caused an enduring strain on host communities and the country’s ability to provide a number of essential services such as health education water and housing. Conflict-affected households are becoming increasingly vulnerable as poverty and food insecurity levels are increasing. With GAC’s support Médecins du Monde Canada is providing comprehensive health care services for up to 315 000 Syrian refugees and vulnerable populations in Lebanon. Project activities include: (1) providing primary healthcare services and referring patients in need of specialised services to secondary/tertiary level of care; (2) providing sexual and reproductive health services; (3) providing mental health and psycho-social support services; (4) increasing the capacities of the local partners and the Ministry of Public Heath through technical support.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased access to quality and comprehensive primary health care sexual and reproductive health and mental health and psychosocial support services; and (2) strengthened national primary health care system and reinforced capacities of local stakeholders. The expected ultimate outcome is lives saved suffering alleviated and human dignity maintained in countries experiencing humanitarian crises or that are food insecure.
