Project Description
The Canada-Honduras Value-Added Agroforestry project (CAHOVA) supports the social and economic development of associative enterprises and the expansion of markets for agroforestry products. It seeks to help low-income members of 38 associative enterprises to diversify their product lines in eight profitable agroforestry sectors: cocoa coffee honey heart of palm tilapia tropical wood furniture and pine resin. The project also seeks to improve production techniques on at least 1 000 hectares and bring to market high-value agroforestry products. Activities are expected to generate income and sustainably improve living conditions of 9 000 direct beneficiaries including 4 000 women and 54 000 indirect beneficiaries. The associative agroforestry enterprises supported by the project are located in the departments of Francisco Morazán El Paraíso Comayagua Santa Barbara and Atlántida.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased and sustainable profitability of productive activities of members of agroforestry associative enterprises particularly for women and young people; and (2) increased and sustainable processing and marketing of agroforestry products carried out by the associative enterprises.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (August 2021) include: (1) 2 161 families implemented profitable and sustainable activities; (2) established 900 hectares of agroforestry systems for 1 300 beneficiaries with the planting of 405 988 coffee cocoa and rambutan. Also planted 45 582 avocado and timber trees and 46 880 Musaceae plants; (3) women participate in economic decision-making in 1 070 families; (4) production increases achieved in seven of the eight agricultural value chains includes: over 527% in cocoa; over 51% in the transformation of coffee; over 15% in pine resin; over 71% in rambutan; over 2 296% for wood; over 96% for honey and over 212% for tilapia; (5) 18 associative enterprises achieved 30% growth in sales through sound environmental practices. This growth is despite difficult conditions due to the pandemic and the tropical storms ETA-IOTA; (6) associative enterprises have 40% women and 33% young people in management positions; (7) trained 1 122 women and they felt more confident speaking in public; (8) 2 399 Gender Equality pacts signed between the membership and their associative enterprises; and (9) 300 Free of Violence Life pacts signed by families.
