Iraq Crisis - Emergency Assistance to Internally Displaced People - ICRC 2015

March 2015 - The humanitarian situation in Iraq continues to deteriorate. The violence between armed groups and government forces has displaced over 2.4 million people from their homes. An estimated 5.2 million people in Iraq have been affected by the conflict and are in need of humanitarian assistance. Basic services including health care and water infrastructure are disrupted resulting in acute humanitarian needs. As fighting and human rights violations persist and international efforts remain to free territory controlled by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) the situation is expected to deteriorate and to cause additional displacement. This project is helping to reduce the vulnerability of internally displaced people affected by the civil unrest in Iraq. Project activities include: (1) providing safe water and sanitation facilities to 1 million people; (2) providing food assistance and essential relief items to 270 000 people; (3) providing financial assistance to 77 000 people; (4) supporting 3 hospitals and nine health centres; (5) providing healthcare for people in conflict-affected and violence-prone areas including victims of SGBV; and (6) promoting international humanitarian law among local authorities armed forces and armed groups.

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased access to functional water and sanitation facilities; (2) increased access to food; (3) increased access to essential relief and hygiene items; (4) increased access to healthcare; (5) increased access to protection services including from sexual and gender-based violence and (6) improved respect for humanitarian principles and international humanitarian law. The expected ultimate outcome is lives saved suffering alleviated and human dignity maintained in countries experiencing humanitarian crises or facing acute food insecurity.
