Project Description
March 2018 – The conflict between Boko Haram and Nigerian armed forces has devastated communities in north-eastern Nigeria. It is estimated that 10.2 million people will require humanitarian assistance in order to survive in 2018 of which 85% are women and children. As the conflict evolves humanitarian access remains a challenge. Assistance for basic survival basic services and protection is vital for displaced populations host communities and vulnerable people across the north-east. With GAC’s support Save the Children Canada is helping to assist more than 109 000 conflict-affected people in Borno state. Project activities include: (1) providing treatment to children under five suffering from severe acute malnutrition and diseases that exacerbate malnutrition benefiting more than 28 000 children; (2) providing hygiene promotion activities with a focus on improving nutrition outcomes benefiting more than 102 000 people; (3) providing psychosocial support and life skills training to girls and boys aged 3-17 benefiting up to 7 060 people; and (4) providing case management response services and referrals to survivors of sexual and gender-based violence unaccompanied and separated children children associated with armed forces and armed groups adolescent heads of household and other at-risk girls and boys benefiting up to 9 050 people.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased access to quality nutrition interventions targeting children under five and pregnant and lactating women and girls; and (2) increased access to quality protection services for girls and boys aged 3-17. The expected ultimate outcome is lives saved suffering alleviated and human dignity maintained in countries experiencing humanitarian crises or acute food insecurity.
