Project Description

March 2018 - Niger continues to face significant humanitarian challenges related to food insecurity malnutrition and forced displacement. The expansion of the conflict in Nigeria has led to more than 400 000 people in need and the highest levels of food insecurity in the country. It is expected that humanitarian needs remain high in Niger’s Diffa region throughout 2018. With GAC’s support Action Against Hunger is addressing the urgent humanitarian needs of up to 28 650 people in the Diffa region. Project activities include: (1) providing reproductive health care services benefiting almost 4 000 women; (2) constructing family latrines benefiting up to 1 400 people; (3) creating advocacy documentation on health nutrition and water sanitation and hygiene; and (4) distributing gas kits for domestic use to reduce cooking-related costs and therefore increase the purchasing power of households benefiting up to 1 100 people.

Expected Results

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased access to quality healthcare improved knowledge and strengthened capacity in reproductive health for women and girls within health structures; (2) increased access to better water and sanitation infrastructures as well as improved hygiene conditions; (3) improved humanitarian coordination in Diffa to ensure better response to the urgent needs in terms of access to basic social services; (4) increased access to clean domestic energy which allows for the preservation of purchasing power for women from the most vulnerable households; and (5) increased access to economic opportunities for vulnerable populations specifically women and girls. The expected ultimate outcome is lives saved suffering alleviated and human dignity maintained in countries experiencing humanitarian crises or acute food insecurity.
