Project Description
March 2018 – The conflict between Boko Haram and Nigerian armed forces has devastated communities in north-eastern Nigeria. It is estimated that 10.2 million people will require humanitarian assistance in order to survive in 2018 of which 85% are women and children. As the conflict evolves humanitarian access remains a challenge. Assistance for basic survival basic services and protection is vital for displaced populations host communities and vulnerable people across the north-east. With GAC’s support Action Against Hunger is helping to assist up to 99 200 conflict-affected people in Borno and Yobe states. Project activities include: (1) rehabilitating or constructing up to 34 water points benefiting up to 34 000 people; (2) sensitizing communities on the Community-Led Total Sanitation approach that mobilizes communities to eliminate open defecation with a specific focus on women and girls benefiting up to 77 000 people; and (3) providing latrines and water supplies within 72 hours of onset of emergency benefiting up to 5 246 people.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased access to safe drinking water improved sanitation and hygiene practices for displaced people and host communities with a particular focus on women and girls; and (2) increased access to emergency water sanitation and hygiene services within 72 hours of onset of emergency. The expected ultimate outcome is lives saved suffering alleviated and human dignity maintained in countries experiencing humanitarian crises or acute food insecurity.
