Project Description
March 2016 - Despite a peace agreement signed in October 2012 between the government and separatist rebels protracted conflict continues on Mindanao Island in the Philippines where more than 150 000 people have died since fighting began in the late 1960s. This situation was further exacerbated when fighting broke out in September 2013 in Zamboanga City between rebel factions and government armed forces. Despite a quick end to hostilities recovery is progressing slowly for 17 000 internally displaced people still living in transition sites where access to clean water sanitation and livelihood opportunities remains a concern. In 2015 armed clashes between government armed forces and armed groups continued to take place sporadically in remote areas of Mindanao and triggered the displacement of over 75 000 people. With GAC’s support Action Against Hunger is contributing to improved basic livelihoods of up to 3 050 people displaced by the conflict in Zamboanga and Maguindanao. Project activities include: (1) providing unconditional cash grants to meet the basic needs of 3 050 people with a focus on pregnant and breastfeeding women and households with children aged 6-23 months; (2) providing quick impact livelihood support through cash transfers to 3 050 people; and (3) providing training in support to quick impact livelihood to 3 050 people.
Expected Results
The expected immediate outcome for this project is improved basic livelihoods for conflict-affected populations particularly women men and children 6-23 months. The expected intermediate outcome is reduced vulnerability of crisis-affected people especially women and children.
