Project Description

December 2015 - The humanitarian situation in Syria continues to deteriorate as a result of the civil war and intensified violence in the country. The United Nations estimates that 13.5 million people inside Syria including 6 million children are in need of humanitarian assistance. Combined with over 4.2 million Syrians seeking refuge from the conflict in neighbouring countries this is the largest number of people displaced from conflict in the world. Women and children are particularly vulnerable to the consequences of the conflict and host countries are increasingly overstretched by the influx of people fleeing the conflict. With DFATD’s support the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is helping the Government of Turkey meet the ongoing protection and humanitarian needs of the more than two million Syrian refugees registered in the country. UNHCR continues to provide material and technical assistance to help the Turkish authorities cope with the vast number of Syrian refugees in core protection areas including: registration and documentation; prevention and response to sexual and gender-based violence; child protection; camp coordination and camp management; and access to asylum. Project activities include: (1) providing cash-based assistance to vulnerable non-camp Syrian refugees; (2) providing core relief and basic domestic items to vulnerable households; and (3) providing technical support to the Government to ensure quality registration profiling and refugee status determination.

Expected Results

The expected immediate outcomes for this project include (1) increased access to core relief items and other basic needs; and (2) improved access to protection. The expected intermediate outcome is reduced vulnerability of crisis-affected people especially women and children.
