Project Description
February 2018 – The humanitarian situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has deteriorated at an alarming rate since 2016. A surge in violent conflict and inter-communal tensions erupted in previously peaceful areas and intensified in others in 2017 forcing millions to flee their homes; bringing the total number of internally displaced people in the country to 4.49 million and severely stretching the humanitarian community’s capacity to respond. Across the DRC at least 13.1 million people require humanitarian assistance - an increase of 79% from the start of 2017. This includes 7.7 million severely food insecure people and close to 2 million severely malnourished children. With GAC’s support the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) is providing assistance to address the urgent needs of up to 24 950 conflict-affected people in South Kivu Tanganyika and Maniema provinces DRC. This project focuses on increasing access to safe water and sanitation facilities non-food items education as well as livelihoods support for conflict affected populations. Project activities include: (1) providing up to 15 350 with tools or resources to improve livelihoods; (2) providing up to 15 350 with access to non-food items and/or hygiene kits; (3) rehabilitating up to 16 water points; and (4) providing up to 3 000 children with access to emergency education.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased access for the most vulnerable populations to safe drinking water; (2) increased access resources that will support livelihoods; (3) increased access of vulnerable people to non-food items; and (4) increased access to emergency education by displaced and conflict-affected children. The expected ultimate outcome is lives saved suffering alleviated and human dignity maintained in South Kivu Tanganyika and Maniema provinces DRC.
