Project Description
This project is part of Global Affairs Canada’s International Aboriginal Youth Internships (IAYI) initiative. The internships focus on increasing the awareness engagement and participation of Indigenous youth in international development while providing them with opportunities to expand their employment skills or further their education. As part of the Pathways to Indigenous Youth Leadership project Canada World Youth (CWY) sends 102 Indigenous youth to Colombia and Peru. For intern recruitment CWY delivers the project in partnership with Canadian organizations with extensive national networks. Interns support local partners in the following areas: agricultural development; engagement of marginalized groups; recycling; reforestation; youth entrepreneurship; health; environmental education; and youth entrepreneurship.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased participation of Indigenous youth interns (women and men) in their communities in the labour market or in the higher education sector in Canada and abroad including in the field of international development; and (2) increased engagement of Indigenous youth interns (women and men) as global citizens who support international development efforts in Canada and abroad including within their communities.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results as of the end of the project in (March 2023) include: (1) 60 young Aboriginal Canadians participated in international development internships in Peru and Colombia. Of these 28 interns completed their internships virtually; and (2) 70 young Aboriginal Canadians participated in pre-departure training field activities in international development and other varied activities. These activities seek to help them enter the Canadian job market or continue their studies.
