Project Description
This project is part of Global Affairs Canada’s International Youth Internship Program (IYIP) funded by the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy. The IYIP is designed to offer Canadian post-secondary graduates the opportunity to gain professional experience in international development. As part of the project Jeunes stagiaires professionnels engagés the Centre de solidarité internationale du Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean in partnership with the Laboratoire d'études et de recherches appliquées sur l'Afrique of the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi and the Cégep de Jonquière is sending 85 interns to four countries. They focus on various sectors such as agro-ecology collective marketing community development the empowerment of young women and girls rural economic development processing of non-timber forest products climate change adaptation and sustainable natural resource management.
Expected Results
The expected intermediate outcomes for this project include: (1) increased efforts by Canadian youth interns (women and men) to secure employment through their internship experience including in the field of international development; and (2) increased engagement of Canadian youth interns (women and men) as global citizens who support international development efforts in Canada and abroad.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of March 2023 include: (1) provided internships for 60 young Canadians in international development in five countries; (2) 69 young Canadians participated as interns in pre-departure training and field activities in international development. They also participated in various activities to help them enter the Canadian job market or continue their studies; and (3) 41% of those who responded to the survey gained employment six months after their internship. This percentage does not reflect the number of those who returned to school after their internship.
