Project Description
The project aims to improve the economic sustainability and resilience of people affected by the 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Nepal on April 25 2015. The earthquake followed by a series of large aftershocks resulted in over 8 700 deaths and 22 000 injuries 2.8 million people displaced and 3.5 million in need of food assistance including over 530 000 people who experience acute food insecurity (no access to safe sufficient and nutritious food). Households involved in farming small business and wage labour have difficulties recovering their livelihoods due to a lack of inputs skilled workforce (temporary migration of household members) and the demands of caring for the elderly and people with disabilities. The project is providing households with agricultural inputs (seeds fertilizer livestock and improved technologies); business and financial support for micro small and medium-sized enterprises; and labour market skills training. Project activities include: (1) rehabilitating small-scale market facilities that were damaged by the earthquake; (2) linking up communities with other service providers on large scale rehabilitation needs to stimulate production and local markets; and (3) providing gender-responsive disaster risk reduction training and organizing awareness-raising in communities (through radio TV and community information sharing) to increase the proportion of communities with disaster risk management plans.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased capacity for women and men in earthquake affected areas to manage and control their economic enterprises; (2) increased establishment of micro small and medium-sized viable enterprises especially those led by women living in earthquake affected areas; and (3) a population of working-age adults especially women and youth living in earthquake affected areas that has the essential demand driven basic skills and knowledge needed to take advantage of economic opportunities in the formal labour market.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of end of the project (August 2018) include: (1) 92% of individuals in the two project districts are able to meet their three most important expenses up from 28% in 2016; (2) 81% of households are meeting their monthly expenses up from 51% in 2016; (3) 91% of households are using improved and environmentally-sustainable agricultural inputs; (4) 33% of household members demonstrated knowledge in disaster risk reduction; (5) the eight Ward Disaster and Climate Resilience Committees have completed and are now implementing disaster and climate resilience plans; (6) 29% of the newly established micro- small- and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) were led by women and 70% of these MSMEs had monthly savings of at least $110 CAD; (7) 91% of female entrepreneurial trainees gained access to markets; (8) 84% of households have at least one working youth up from 52% in 2016; and (9) 82% of youth and adults demonstrated awareness of labour market opportunities.
