Project Description
The project aims to increase stabilization and early recovery conditions of in areas of Mosul District by clearing explosive hazards and build local capacity to address residual contamination in the future. The project provides mentorship and oversight to all operations through locally trained teams. Project activities include: (1) training and mentoring local teams to deliver mine risk education for local communities; (2) conducting non-technical surveys; and (3) conducting clearance operations.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased access to safe agricultural and residential land by beneficiaries in liberated areas of Mosul District; (2) increased knowledge of the locations and extent of explosive hazard contamination by stakeholders including Iraqi authorities and the civilian population in Mosul District; (3) increased knowledge of appropriate and safe behaviour by the population of communities living in and around areas contaminated by explosive hazards in Mosul; and (4) increased national capacity to address the impact of explosive hazards particularly improvised landmines in Mosul District and other liberated areas.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of March 2020 include: (1) 2 189 244 m² of land was cleared in the Mosul District of Iraq of which 1 977 475m² has been released to the local population including residential commercial and agricultural land; (2) 2 588 improvised explosive devices and 290 unexploded ordnance were found and destroyed; and (3) Mine Risk Education was delivered to 3 336 women 13 870 girls 2 158 men and 12 377 boys.
