Project Description
March 2017 – Since the signing of the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement in October 2015 Myanmar has taken significant strides towards peace and prosperity. However conflicts prolonged displacement and continued inter-communal tensions in addition to the country’s vulnerability to natural disasters result in significant humanitarian needs that continue in 2017. In total an estimated 525 000 people will be in need of humanitarian assistance this year. With GAC’s support the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA Canada) is increasing access to clean water hygiene and sanitation services and improving access to goods and basic services for up to 22 130 conflict-affected and displaced populations in 50 camps in areas of Kachin and Northern Shan states. Project activities include: (1) delivering gender sensitive hygiene promotion training to up to 20 270 internally displaced people; (2) rehabilitation and maintenance of water supply systems; (3) construction of up to 100 gender-sensitive latrines and repair and maintenance including desludging of up to 100 latrines; and (4) providing monthly and general multi-purpose cash grants to up to 2 200 vulnerable displaced people and general multi-purpose cash grants to up to 4 500 vulnerable displaced households to improve access to goods and basic services and emergency cash assistance to 750 newly displaced households.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased access to safe drinking water and improved hygiene and sanitation for up to 22 130 internally displaced people in 50 targeted camps; and (2) increased safe and dignified access to goods and services critical to the survival and basic well-being of up to 22 130 internally displaced people in 50 targeted camps. The expected ultimate outcome is lives saved suffering alleviated and human dignity maintained in countries experiencing humanitarian crises or acute food insecurity.
