Project Description

This project aims to increase gender balance across United Nations (UN) operations. Based on the findings of the Global Study on Implementation of Security Council resolution 1325 (UNSCR 1325) it is critical that dedicated technical capacity on gender equality and women’s participation and leadership is placed at the center of current UN peace and security reform efforts. This project supports the placement of a Senior Gender Advisor from UN Women to the Executive Office of the Secretary General. The Senior Gender Advisor‘s role is to inform processes of planning analysis and policy at the highest levels of the UN to promote the integration of gender equality within the organization and its operations.

Expected Results

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) improved gender balance across the UN system at all levels leading to a more inclusive institution and increased focus on women’s participation in outcomes particularly in the peace and security pillar; and (2) improved implementation of the Recommendations from the Global Study on UNSCR 1325.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved by the Senior Gender Advisor as of December 2021 include: (1) supported the UN to reach the highest levels of gender parity across the senior management group of the UN and among resident coordinators for the first time in UN history. With 26 women and 16 men in these positions this places the UN senior leadership well ahead of schedule to achieve the goal of parity by 2021; (2) raised gender equality issues in all critical policy statements of the UN Secretary-General from G20 to climate change to counter-terrorism; and (3) created an internal task force on gender equality financing in the UN to better understand the actual spend on gender equality.
