Project Description

With the support of Canada and other donors the Peace Operations Training Institute (POTI) is contributing to the improved capacity of peacekeepers through large-scale e-learning programs. POTI activities include: (1) the design and delivery of a full curriculum of e-learning on peacekeeping in national and regional peacekeeping training centers throughout Africa and Latin America and the Caribbean; (2) the delivery of specific training on gender equality and the role of women in conflict resolution; and (3) the provision of the full peacekeeping training curriculum online including instruction on human rights and international conflict resolution to military personnel police and civilians serving in all peacekeeping missions. Peacekeepers must have a variety of skill sets to serve on complex and multi-dimensional missions. In response the peacekeeping community has made extensive use of e-learning for years to provide standard training to military peacekeepers police and civilians. POTI offers a full curriculum of self-paced e-learning courses covering many aspects of peace support operations that can be delivered flexibly through national peacekeeping training centres and missions. Training is delivered by e-learning at regional and national peacekeeping training centres prior to deployment during deployments and directly to individual peacekeepers.

Expected Results

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased capacity of peacekeepers deployed into peacekeeping missions through improved access to training; (2) enhanced awareness of gender equality and the role of women in conflict resolution; and (3) improved efficiency of peacekeeping training.
