Project Description

The purpose of this project is to help ensure that a democratically elected government is put in place in Haiti. Hurricane Matthew caused considerable infrastructure damage when it hit Haiti on October 4 2016. The elections that were scheduled to take place on October 9 2016 were therefore postponed for several reasons including the fact that several buildings that were supposed to be polling stations were destroyed or damaged. Because of this damage to the buildings tents must be purchased to serve as provisional polling stations for the November 20 2016 elections. Funding is added to the United Nations Development Program’s (UNDP’s) multi-donor fund to continue to support the Haitian government in conducting elections and to allow the UNDP to purchase tents and to go ahead with scheduled activities.

Expected Results

The project’s expected result is that the provisional electoral council (CEP) is able to organize and coordinate presidential partial legislative and local elections that are transparent fair and credible with the help of outside partners and limited logistical security and technical support from the United Nations.

Progress & Results Achieved

The results achieved as of the end of the project (March 2018) include: 929 tents as temporary voting centres were installed and 252 463 voters used these tents to vote. This represents 23.7% of the total number of voters for the 2016 election (1 062 839). This demonstrated that the provisional electoral council (CEP) was able to organize and coordinate presidential partial legislative and local elections that are transparent fair and credible with the help of outside partners and limited logistical security and technical support from the United Nations.
