Project Description

The initiative aims to reduce maternal and perinatal mortality in twelve rural communities located in Koulikoro and Segou in Mali as well as in the Echarate district in Peru. In Mali and targeted areas in Peru perinatal mortality and chronic malnutrition rates are very high. Activities include: (1) training on perinatal health birthing techniques education on mothers and children‘s health; (2) equipment of twelve Community health centers and seventy-five maternity hospitals in Mali as well as height health centers in Peru; (3) the production and distribution of television and radio programs on maternal newborn and children under five health issues; (4) support for the local food production through agricultural cooperatives. In Canada the project increases the awareness of the Estrie public on the health issues of mothers and children in Mali and Peru. Carrefour de Solidarité International is implementing this project in collaboration with the following local partners: Ayni Desarrollo in Peru and l’Association Kilabo in Mali.

Expected Results

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) improved provision of perinatal health services for mothers pregnant women newborns and children under five in twelve towns in Mali and areas of Camisea and Kiteni in Peru; (2) an increase in nutritious food consumption by mothers newborns and children under five in twelve towns in Mali and two areas of Echarate district in Peru; and (3) increased awareness of the Canadian population on the health issues of mothers and children in Mali and Peru.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of the end of the project (July 2020) include: (1) nine health centres in Peru in addition to 15 community health centers and 40 maternity clinics in Mali are equipped with medical equipment for prenatal examinations births episiotomies manual intrauterine aspiration sterilization and la analyses; (2) 138 health workers (of which 95 women) in Peru and 162 workers (of which 108 women) in Mali showed an improvement in their perinatal health skills; (3) in Peru 69 women and adolescent girls and 41 men and adolescent boys improved their knowledge and skills to take on the duties and responsibilities of the monitoring committees and in Mali the numbers were 610 women and 278 men; (4) in Mali 94 7% of women of childbearing age (5 907 women) and 89% of men (1 849 men) now believe in the need to apply the practices recommended by the WHO to improve nutrition within their family and (5) in Canada 4 866 women 1 004 adolescent girls 3 604 men and 783 adolescent boys had access to relevant information on Canada's action on sexual and reproductive health and family planning in Mali and Peru through school activities newspaper articles forums and photography exhibits.
