Project Description
March 2017 – As a result of the ongoing political tension and insecurity in neighbouring Burundi north-western Tanzania has seen 158 000 new refugees arrive since April 2015 a number which is expected to double in 2017. Tanzania already hosts 70 000 Congolese refugees. Altogether the high number of refugees has strained the local response capacity of both Tanzanian authorities and aid agencies. There is now a critical need for international support to rebuild and refit existing camps establish new ones as well as to provide food and other basic services to all refugees on an ongoing basis. With GAC’s support Doctors Without Borders is providing emergency healthcare support to an estimated 60 000 Burundian refugees and host community members living in or around the Nduta refugee camp in Kigoma region Tanzania.
Expected Results
The expected outcome for this project is improved access to healthcare for refugees and host communities in or around the Nduta refugee camp. The expected ultimate outcome is lives saved suffering alleviated and human dignity maintained in countries experiencing humanitarian crises or that are food insecure.
