Project Description
March 2017 - Chad struggles with humanitarian emergencies related to food insecurity malnutrition and displacement. As a result 4.7 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance. More than 1 million people are faced with severe food shortages that threaten to wipe out their livelihoods. Global acute malnutrition has surpassed the emergency threshold in six of the country’s 23 regions and severe acute malnutrition in 11 regions. Conflicts and insecurity have uprooted some 580 000 people internally and from neighbouring countries. With GAC’s support CARE addresses the urgent humanitarian needs of up to 34 000 people in the Lac Region. Project activities include: (1) distributing dignity kits for women and girls which contain items required to maintain feminine hygiene dignity and respect in their daily lives baby kits and other non-food items benefiting up to 3 000 women and girls and 1 000 babies; (2) distributing cash-for-work to up to 400 beneficiaries for work on small community projects and providing unconditional cash assistance to up to 100 vulnerable people; (3) providing training to religious community and Village Saving and Loan Association leaders on post abortive care and family planning and organizing awareness campaigns on the issue benefiting up to 34 000 people.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased access to water sanitation and essential hygiene items; (2) increase livelihood opportunities and production capacity particularly for women-headed households; and (3) increased access to quality reproductive health services for women and girls and increased awareness of affected populations to reproductive health issues. The expected ultimate outcome is lives saved suffering alleviated and human dignity maintained in countries experiencing humanitarian crises or acute food insecurity.
