Project Description
March 2017 - The humanitarian situation in Cameroon continues to be of deep concern and affects millions of vulnerable people. The number of people displaced by violence has been on the rise since 2015 with currently more than 500 000 people either internally displaced from their homes or who fled to Cameroon from neighbouring countries. Insecurity and violence have increased the risks of abuse and rights violations. About 2.8 million people are lacking access to safe sufficient and nutritious food and some 273 000 children under five are suffering from moderate or severe acute malnutrition. In 2017 it is estimated that 2.9 million people will be in need of humanitarian assistance. With GAC’s support Œuvre Léger is helping to assist up to 40 185 conflict-affected people in the Far North region. Project activities include: (1) constructing up to ten water points benefiting up to 15 000 people; (2) training health personnel on guiding principles standards and protocols surrounding management and referral of gender-based violence cases; (3) providing treatment against severe acute malnutrition to up to 1 000 children under the age of five; (4) providing cash support to farmers and vulnerable producers to meet their basic needs during welding periods; and (5) providing support to farmers producers and traders to better organize production and increase their productivity.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased safe access to sustainable drinking water; (2) increased access to free and quality medical care; (3) increased access to interventions to prevent detect and treat severe acute malnutrition for children under five; (4) increased access to cash support to secure livelihoods; and (5) increased access to livelihoods and markets systems. The expected ultimate outcome is lives saved suffering alleviated and human dignity maintained in countries experiencing humanitarian crises or acute food insecurity.
