Project Description
March 2017 - The humanitarian situation in Cameroon continues to be of deep concern and affects millions of vulnerable people. The number of people displaced by violence has been on the rise since 2015 with currently more than 500 000 people either internally displaced from their homes or who fled to Cameroon from neighbouring countries. Insecurity and violence have increased the risks of abuse and rights violations. About 2.8 million people are lacking access to safe sufficient and nutritious food and some 273 000 children under five are suffering from moderate or severe acute malnutrition. In 2017 it is estimated that 2.9 million people will be in need of humanitarian assistance. With GAC’s support CARE Canada is helping to assist up to 30 000 conflict-affected people in the Far North region. Project activities include: (1) constructing or rehabilitating up to 60 water points; (2) organizing malnutrition awareness sessions in communities benefiting up to 30 000 people; (3) providing unconditional cash transfers to support livelihood activities for up to 300 women-headed households; and (4) providing access to shelter for up to 1 200 internally displaced people.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased access to drinking water sanitation hygiene items and healthy hygiene practices; (2) increased capacity of community workers and vulnerable populations to identify malnutrition; (3) increased capacity for the most vulnerable to meet their basic needs especially women; and (4) improved access to better accommodation conditions for vulnerable displaced populations especially women-headed households. The expected ultimate outcome is lives saved suffering alleviated and human dignity maintained in countries experiencing humanitarian crises or acute food insecurity.
