Project Description
This project aims to strengthen and develop Senegal’s knowledge-based economy by building upon the established African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) Industry Initiative and Co-op Master’s Program to support the integration and engagement of Senegalese female and male scientists in industry and entrepreneurship across the Francophonie. The project strengthens the capacity of AIMS Senegal to deliver skills-for-employment through demand-driven work placements in the science and technology sectors with a focus on integrating women scientists and deepening sustainable linkages with the private sector in Senegal and other Francophonie countries. The direct beneficiaries of this project are 200 AIMS Senegal students enrolled in the Cooperative Master 320 students enrolled in the post AIMS professional aptitude certificate and 2 250 students enrolled in online courses. This project is implemented by the AIMS - Next Einstein Initiative Foundation (Canada) in partnership with AIMS Senegal.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) strengthening the organizational management of employment skills programs within AIMS Senegal; (2) increased relevance of employment skills programs to the labor market and / or entrepreneurship needs among youth women men and vulnerable groups; and (3) strengthening partnerships integrating gender institutions employment training and private sector enterprises including women-led enterprises from Francophone African countries.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (July 2021) include: (1) trained 178 out of 200 students including 55 women in the Cooperative Master’s program at the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) Senegal; (2) 109 students from the first five cohorts of the program graduated in their field of study; (3) AIMS Senegal implemented a strategy called “Virtual Internship” to respond to the challenges of COVID-19. It allowed 52% of beneficiaries to conduct their internship online; (4) established skills for employment program in Francophone Africa that involved 76 partners (65 businesses and 11 civil society organizations); and (5) strengthened organizational and managerial capacities of AIMS Senegal and Support staff in Canada and Rwanda through training. These trainings included sexual harassment policy in the workplace anonymous whistleblowing policy gender equality results-based management and integrated Workplace Learning. The project achieved 70% of its objectives on these trainings.
