Project Description

Through support to The Hospital for SickKids (SickKids) this initiative seeks to help the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital Trust (NMCHT) put in place operations and management systems for the new 200-bed Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital (NMCH) located in Johannesburg. Global Affairs Canada funding to this project supports SickKids Hospital to provide technical support to the NMCH in the following areas: 1) recruitment and training of key operational and clinical staff; 2) establishment of effective governance and management structures fair procurement of capital and operational equipment; and 3) establishment of world-class clinical research and teaching platforms. Under this project SickKids partners with the NMCH by offering its expertise across a broad spectrum of advisory services to build the hospital’s capacity and help it realise its vision of improved child-centred specialised paediatric healthcare services for children in South Africa and the southern Africa region irrespective of their social and economic status.

Expected Results

The expected outcomes for this project include: 1) enhanced pediatric care and treatment for children in South Africa irrespective of their ability to pay; 2) enhanced governance management systems for the effective operation of the NMCH; and 3) strengthened research clinical care and education by NMCH in support of pediatric health care in South Africa.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of the end of the project (May 2020) include: (1) 4 500 pediatric patients from 4 South African provinces have received treatment since the opening of the hospital; (2) 135 children have benefitted from specialized pediatric cardiac procedures; (3) 34 NMCH staff participated in exchange programs with SickKids Toronto in their areas of specialty; (4) 1 100 SickKids policies procedures and guidelines were shared and tailored to meet the needs of NMCH; and (5) more than 320 doctors nurses and NMCH staff were trained. These results have contributed to enhanced pediatric care and treatment for children in South Africa irrespective of their ability to pay and strengthened research clinical care and education at NMCH in support of pediatric health care in South Africa.
