Project Description
The project aims to improve the ability of vulnerable Palestinian refugees to deal with the difficult social economic and political situation in the West Bank and Gaza. CIDA's contribution with that of other donors allows the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) to improve the food security of the refugees by providing them with food assistance and temporary employment. This project is one of over 200 projects that make up the United Nations' 2011 Consolidated Appeal Process (CAP) for the West Bank and Gaza. The 2011 CAP worth over US$575 million allows the international community to help spare Palestinians from the worst effects of the ongoing crisis by delivering humanitarian assistance increasing the protection of civilians improving the collection of humanitarian information and strengthening the United Nations' humanitarian coordination structure. Overall through this appeal non-governmental organizations and the United Nations help restore human dignity and alleviate further poverty institutional weakness and instability in the West Bank and Gaza.
Expected Results
The expected intermediate outcome for this project is improved resilience of Palestinian men women and children to cope with the crisis.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of project include: 131 037 families or 690 337 poor and vulnerable Palestinians received emergency food; 5 325 000 meals were provided to 213 000 students over 25 school days; and 7 189 people received one three and four-month employment contracts that have benefited 44 466 dependents in the West Bank. These have contributed to the improved ability of vulnerable Palestinian refugees to mitigate the impact of the crisis on their household food security.
