Project Description
The Aga Khan Foundation of Canada and CIDA support the Cairo Economic Livelihoods Project to reduce poverty including inequality and promote the local economic growth of two poor neighbourhoods of Cairo by increasing and improving employment and developing the private sector through the provision of employability services and financial and business development services (BDS). The Goal of the project is to contribute to a sustained economic renewal and growth of target districts. The Purpose of the project is to strengthen the livelihoods of the targeted population and reduce poverty through business development financial services and employability services.
Progress & Results Achieved
From Project Browser (August2016)= Results achieved as of April 2012 include: 803 people received vocational training including 452 on administration topics and 351 on technical issues of which 62.54% were female.1 392 people received counselling services including 43.82% females and 489 people were employed after receiving these services of which 51% were female. Various types of support such as training and market assessments were provided through 195 workshops and business owners. 21 751 loans were made to micro and small enterprises of which 60% were led by women. Results achieved as of March 2013 include: 160 people received vocational training (87% women). 250 people received counselling services (111 became employed).The LCBD unit also directly supported 88 workshops to address product design and market access barriers identified in earlier market research. FMF-E provided 6 479 loans (77.7% women)FMF-E BDS Centre provided support to 2 895 clients (80% women) A third annual job fair was held in Al Azhar Park sponsored by the Social Fund for Development (SFD) CIDA and the Cairo Governorate. In total 48 companies looking to fill positions participated as exhibitors. There were 1 678 attendees at the fair over three days; through the fair 735 clients received interviews with 62 receiving employment. A new BDS location was established during the reporting period allowing access to a wider and more diverse client base.
