Project Description
This project aims to measure the current status of women and to show how they see themselves as members of society of the economy and the political system in countries of the Middle East and North Africa. The project aims to accomplish this by combining individual-level public opinion data and country-level statistical data into a set of comprehensive and comparable indicators and corresponding policy recommendations. The project also aims to build the capacity of local non-governmental organizations (NGO) seeking to improve women’s well-being by providing these NGOs with information the tools to develop policy recommendations from this information and the skills for working on media awareness-raising campaigns and activities with parliaments to advance issues of women’s status.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results as of March 2012 (end of the project) include: The International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) conducted three surveys in the Middle East and North Africa region with local survey firms 16 workshops for the benefit of over 50 local non-governmental organizations in Morocco Lebanon and Yemen; and provided grants to two local non-governmental organizations in Morocco and Lebanon who undertook advocacy campaigns. The project also produced three country reports 24 topic briefs two lobby training manuals and a capacity-building toolkit aimed at increasing the capacity of local change agents including targeted local non-governmental organizations and members of parliament to effectively advocate for gender equality. This documentation is available on the project’s website at www.SWMENA.org. Further IFES established a variety of connections and informal networks between women’s advocates in Morocco Lebanon and Yemen. Overall this work contributed to increasing the effectiveness of local non-governmental organizations to promote gender equality.
