Project Description

This project supports the re-engineering of the Ukrainian judicial system. It aims to (i) enhance the efficiency and transparency of court operations in selected model courts; (ii) enhance the capacity of the Academy of Judges of Ukraine and its regional branches to plan design and deliver relevant court operations training programs and courses to judges and court staff; and (iii) raise awareness among Ukrainians of the role of the judiciary.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results at end of project include: (i) improved standards of client service in 3 model courts through the training of 184 judges and 68 court personnel to adopt gender-sensitive best practices in court administration; (ii) strengthened capacity of the Academy of Judges to design and deliver training for up to 1000 judges and 3000 court employees in 22 other model courts using a modern skills-based methodology; (iii) 5 000 copies of a Modern Court Management Manual with training modules distributed to courts to help set new standards of court accessibility and service to the public; (iv) improved public understanding of the role of courts through public information materials and dialogue events involving members of the judiciary and the public. By contributing to the reform of the judicial system this project improved Ukrainians' access to a fair justice system that protects their rights and freedoms.
