Project Description
The project aims to foster a greater understanding and an enduring commitment to the values of liberal-democratic governance the rule of law and public participation. It intends to do so by building a cadre of trainers and self-sustaining training programs on democratic principles to provide secondary and tertiary education institutions and their students as well as government officials with an understanding of their responsibilities and accountability in a system based on the rule of law and respect for civil liberties.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results at end of project include: According to survey data courses using the project-supported Fundamentals of Democracy textbook are now being taught in 89 per cent of Ukraine’s universities. Four textbooks were published in 2010-2011 to support the new curriculum on democratic policing in a Political Science course for officer cadets in Ministry of Internal Affairs universities. A 2010 textbook intended to train teachers in the fundamentals of democracy is now used in all pedagogical institutions. In January 2011 a text adapted from the project’s Fundamentals of Democracy text won a national competition becoming the required textbook for a compulsory Grade XI course entitled “The Human in Society” which will be in use in all 20 000 Ukrainian secondary schools.
