Project Description
This project aims to improve food security - or access to safe nutritious and sufficient food - by supporting agriculture and promoting people’s adaptation to climate change. It seeks to help 40 000 vulnerable people living in Boucle du Mouhoun including farmers’ groups their families with a particular focus on women and youth In Boucle du Mouhoun climate change is causing soil to be depleted of nutrients water to become scarce and deforestation all of which contribute to reducing farmers’ ability to produce enough food. This threatens the food security of people living in the region. To address this the project seeks to: (i) produce and distribute improved crop seeds sheep and goats to increase and diversify agricultural production; (ii) introduce new crops such as cowpeas (a legume that grows well in poor soils) to improve family diets; (iii) promote and demonstrating better practices and techniques for breeding and raising small livestock; (iv) provide training so that people can use manure to produce biogas a renewable fuel source; and (v) reforest using native species including acacia to help farmers adopt agro-environmental innovations that fight desertification. Union des producteurs agricoles - Développement international and Fondation Jules et Paul-Émile Léger are working in partnership with Union des groupements pour la commercialisation des produits agricoles de la Boucle du Mouhoun (Boucle du Mouhoun Union of groupings for the marketing of agricultural products) to implement this project. This project is one of ten projects that received funding from the Canada Fund for African Climate Resilience through Foreign Affairs Trade and Development Canada.
Expected Results
The expected intermediate outcomes for this project include: i) increased agricultural productivity and agricultural diversification by women and adolescents in the Boucle du Mouhoun region; ii) increased farm incomes for women and adolescents; iii) improvement in the adoption of agro-environmental innovations to better combat desertification; and iv) increased use of renewable energy on farms.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results at the end of the project (March 2014) include: 1) 885 women and 311 young men each received seeds (7 146 kg) and fertilizers (59 800 kg) along with complementary training for the exploitation of their own 0.5 hectares of cowpeas resulting in an additional 598 hectares sowed with cowpeas in the project area; 2) The total market value of the cowpeas collectively sold was FCFA 44 800 000 (approximately CA $105 000); 3) 886 women and 309 men were trained for the construction of holding pens wire fencing and walls and received financial support for the purchase of 3 858 farm animals; 4) The estimated value of kid piglet and lamb production at the end of the first year was FCFA 83 040 000 (approximately CA $195 000); 5) 200 bio gaz producing machines were installed and are functional in 200 households from which members received training about the machine’s operations and what security measures to adopt; 6) 355 women and 162 men benefitted from 21 days of training and acquired 9 533 plantlets of Faidherbia Albida a drought resistant tree that was planted for the reforestation of +/- 100 square hectares; 7) 88 project participant groups took advantage of awareness and training sessions regarding reforestation; 8) Nine wells were drilled including one for the exploitation of a tree nursery and eight were drilled in villages. These results contribute to the sustainable improvement of rural households’ food security in the Boucle du Mouhoun region of Burkina Faso through agricultural development particularly with women and youth.
