Expected Results

The expected intermediate outcomes for this project include: (i) increased awareness among female and male Canadian youth of the equal possibility of working internationally; (ii) enhanced equal employability of female and male International Youth Internship Program (IYIP) interns in Canada and in the field of international development; (iii) improved capacity of female and male IYIP interns to contribute to international development in a gender-sensitive way.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of the end of the project (February 2014) include: coordinating 20 internships in four countries (Ethiopia Jamaica Ukraine Philippines). The interns increased their knowledge of best practices in local economic development and gained practical experience in international development. For example interns in Ukraine helped to develop local economic development strategies that were adopted in the villages of Zelena and Voynyliv. In Jamaica interns supported the implementation of local sustainable development plans in the regions of Manchester and St. Elizabeth. The interns acquired new skills and abilities such as a strong understanding of the local development context through their work with local partners. Interns also gained professional skills including time management organization team work facilitation problem-solving and negotiation.
