Project Description

This project is part of CIDA's International Youth Internship Program (IYIP) funded by the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy (YES). The IYIP contributes to the YES by providing a large spectrum of Canadian graduates with valuable international development work experience abroad.

Expected Results

The expected intermediate outcomes for this project include: i) increased awareness to female and male Canadian youth of the equal possibility of working internationally; ii) enhanced equal employability of female and male IYIP interns in Canada and in the field of international development; iii) improved capacity of female and male IYIP interns to contribute to international development in a gender sensitive way.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of the end of the project (February 2014) include: (1) Five interns gained experience in the practical applications of information communication technologies (ICTs) by working with two local organizations in Bangladesh and a university college in Tanzania. Upon returning to Canada one of the interns used this experience to obtain a temporary job with an international non-governmental organization and two others were interviewed by potential employers. (2) The interns shared their overseas experiences with 335 students at Humber college thereby increasing the awareness of Canadian youth of the possibilities of working in international development. (3) The interns supported the host organizations in designing and applying ICT systems; providing their staff with ICT training; and promoting ICT-supported marketing and public outreach activities. These activities contributed to improving the effectiveness of the host organizations and to increasing awareness of Canadian youth of the opportunities for international development work.
