Project Description

This project is part of CIDA's International Youth Internship Program (IYIP) funded by the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy (YES). The IYIP contributes to the YES by providing a large spectrum of Canadian graduates with valuable international development work experience abroad.

Expected Results

The expected intermediate outcomes for this project include: (i) increased awareness among female and male Canadian youth of the equal possibility of working internationally; (ii) enhanced equal employability of female and male International Youth Internship Program (IYIP) interns in Canada and in the field of international development; (iii) improved capacity of female and male IYIP interns to contribute to international development in a gender-sensitive way.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved at the end of the project (March 2014) include: (i) logging a total of 7 684 website visits to the program; and (ii) selecting 14 interns (all women) from a pool of 203 applicants who completed their internships with local partners in the following cities in Nicaragua: 10 in Pearl Lagoon 3 in Esteli and 1 in Managua. The local partners assessed the interns’ contributions as very valuable in strengthening overall efforts in gender sensitive education. Further the interns themselves reported an increase in self-capacity to employ gender sensitive initiatives in international development resulting from their participation in the program. In addition 75% believe that their activities had a positive impact. The interns were also successful in raising awareness and engaging 609 Canadians (217 men and 473 women) in gender sensitive programming through: (i) hosting cross country public engagement workshops events and presentations; and (ii) publishing 39 blog posts 379 tweets 5 videos and 18 articles for various publications.
