Project Description
This project is part of CIDA's International Youth Internship Program (IYIP) funded by the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy (YES). The IYIP contributes to the YES by providing a large spectrum of Canadian graduates with valuable international development work experience abroad.
Expected Results
The expected intermediate outcomes for this project include: (i) increased awareness to female and male Canadian youth of the equal possibility of working internationally; (ii) enhanced equal employability of female and male IYIP interns in Canada and in the field of international development; and (iii) improved capacity of female and male IYIP interns to contribute to international development in a gender sensitive way.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (March 2014) include: Cuso International coordinated 20 internships in 6 countries. The interns assisted local partners in areas such as youth employment and entrepreneurship active citizenship and natural resources management. The interns focussed on training and facilitation (25%) research and report writing (50%) and sharing resources and skills (25%). For example one intern facilitated violence prevention workshops in 12 schools for 350 families and held goal-setting workshops with 19 youth in Peru. The interns acquired new skills and abilities that increase their employability such as: facilitating workshops public speaking project management financial management research reporting etc. Additional opportunities for learning and networking were also provided to the interns. For example one intern participated in Caribbean Agriculture Week which brings together experts and participants from all over the region for a week of workshops exhibition and meetings. The issues discussed range from the role of information and communications technology in the value chain women’s participation in agriculture climate change and the fisheries industry.
