Project Description
This project is part of CIDA's International Youth Internship Program (IYIP) funded by the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy (YES). The IYIP contributes to the YES by providing a large spectrum of Canadian graduates with valuable international development work experience abroad.
Expected Results
The expected intermediate outcomes for this project include: (i) increased awareness among female and male Canadian youth of the equal possibility of working internationally; (ii) enhanced equal employability of female and male International Youth Internship Program (IYIP) interns in Canada and in the field of international development; and (iii) improved capacity of female and male IYIP interns to contribute to international development in a gender-sensitive way.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved at the end of the project (March 2014) include: L’AMIE coordinated twenty internships in four countries: Madagascar Rwanda Bolivia and Honduras. Thanks to this program eight local organizations dedicated to the wellbeing of children increased the number of activities to children with regards for example to nutrition hygiene reading or arithmetic as well as activities for young single mothers about reproductive health and family planning and remedial education training for social workers. Approximately 1 150 children overall benefited from the program. The interns acquired new skills and abilities that increased their employability. From a professional perspective the interns acquired new skills in project management education handicraft and social work in an intercultural context. From a personal perspective they acquired new abilities in stress management conflict management self-control improved learning skills or improved language skills including knowledge of new cultural practices all in an intercultural context. These new skills increased the interns’ employability significantly and 50% of them were employed in their field of study within a month following their return to Canada.
