Project Description

This project aims to improve the lives of those in some of the poorest areas of El Salvador the communities of San Francisco Javier Ozatlan Tecapán San Agustín Berlin and part of Jiquilisco in the Department of Usulután by improving the long term economic and environmental viability of the local community-owned coffee processing plant. The project seeks to (1) build an ecologically and economically sustainable coffee production and processing business; (2) enhance the food security of vulnerable subsistence coffee farmers in the region by ensuring access to safe nutritious and sufficient food; and (3) improve the ability of the community-run organization the Association of United Communities of Usulután (COMUS) to respond to the needs of the people. The project also aims to improve rural women’s inclusion and participation in the integrated rural development programs that COMUS runs.

Expected Results

The expected intermediate outcomes for this project include: (i) increased capacity of rural families to produce a diversity of food and income crops; (ii) increased understanding and use of sustainable coffee production and other agricultural practices to improve watershed health and improve on-farm productivity; (iii) improved capacity for the Association of United Communities of Usulután (COMUS) to implement its rural development programs with a focus on improved gender equity and gender sensitivity in the distribution of those programs; and (iv) increased capacity of COMUS to implement its vision of sustainable integrated rural development programming by improving the environmental and economic performance of its community-owned coffee processing plant.
