Project Description
This project aims to increase the income of women entrepreneurs in six indigenous women’s federations. It also focuses on improving food security and nutrition in marginalized indigenous populations. Nutritious food products are harvested processed and sold by the women’s federations to the school breakfast program to improve the nutrition and health of local children. Women entrepreneurs increase their agricultural production and their capacity to process food and to market these. They benefit from training equipment and materials. The local partner for this project is "Fundacion RENACE". The project takes place in the La Paz department.
Expected Results
The expected intermediate outcomes include: 2 750 students receive daily school breakfasts; revenues of the families producing the breakfasts increase by 25%; 850 families have improved their techniques in agriculture; 850 families have improved their economic position and level of nutrition.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (September 2016) include: (1) 2 750 students in 52 schools receive daily school breakfasts; (2) 266 women were involved in providing products processing and serving these breakfasts; (3) 480 females were trained in agro-ecological practices and in turn have trained 3 151 small farmers in 87 community replica workshops exceeding the target of 850 small farmers by 2 301 people; (4) 850 families have received technical assistance on their farms from project staff; (5) diet diversification results were achieved: 70% reduction in carbohydrate consumption; 13% increase in protein consumption; 25% increase in “good fat” consumption reported amongst student beneficiaries; (6) the municipalities of Palos Blancos and Alto Beni are both now financing the school breakfast program in their jurisdictions covering 100% of the costs; (7) 100% of the food used in the school feeding program is sourced locally; and (8) 80% (target was 65%) of beneficiary families reported having enough food for three meals per day.
