Project Description

The project aims to provide free eye examinations to 40 000 students of 500 schools of the Dhule district in the state of Maharashtra India. Project activities include: (1) mobilization of a team of experts and support staff for paediatric ophthalmology; (2) equipping and deployment of two mobile clinics; (3) provision of eye exams for girls who are dropping out of school; (4) counselling parents of sight impaired students; and (5) development of a training manual for teachers student handbooks and an awareness video on how to maintain eye health.

Expected Results

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) local partner demonstrates a sustainable financial model for preventive intervention for eye health in the District; (2) students (girls and boys) self-manage eye care and promote eye health in their homes; and eye health/vision is restored /corrected within rural student (girls and boys) population.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of March 2013 include: (1) screening over 10 000 students (25% of the project’s target); (ii) sending the outreach team to playschools kindergartens and special schools for the mentally challenged the hearing impaired and others to screen children under three years old. The screening found 1 211 children with vision problems 736 of whom needed glasses and 475 of whom needed medical treatment. These results are contributing to improving eye health for children in the Dhule district of Maharashtra state.
