Project Description

This project is part of CIDA's International Aboriginal Youth Internships (IAYI) initiative. The internships focus on increasing the awareness engagement and participation of Aboriginal youth in international development while providing them with opportunities to expand their employment skills. CIDA provides up to $15 000 per internship to Canadian organizations that manage the internships and recruit interns. The IAYI initiative is part of CIDA’s Global Citizens Program that seeks to raise awareness increase knowledge and provide opportunities for youth to participate in international development.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of the end of the project (August 2012) include: This project provided ten Aboriginal interns with international work experience and career skills through raising awareness of international development in Canada and working with host organizations in Zambia and Uganda. All ten Aboriginal interns contributed to Canada’s development efforts increasing their knowledge of international development and crosscutting themes. The interns developed a deeper understanding of issues such as access to education food security nutrition healthcare access to water gender equality environmental sustainability poverty and the importance of responding to locally identified needs and priorities. Over 80 000 Canadians have been informed about Canada’s development efforts through newspaper articles social media and radio interviews. Interns increased their employment skills including public speaking computer and networking skills through their work in Canada and overseas. Interns received assistance in identifying and meeting their employment and education goals.
