Project Description
This project is part of CIDA's International Aboriginal Youth Internships (IAYI) initiative. The internships focus on increasing the awareness engagement and participation of Aboriginal youth in international development while providing them with opportunities to expand their employment skills. CIDA provides up to $15 000 per internship to Canadian organizations that manage the internships and recruit interns. The IAYI initiative is part of CIDA’s Global Citizens Program that seeks to raise awareness increase knowledge and provide opportunities for youth to participate in international development.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (August 2012): In terms of international development interns completed 107 hours of training regarding different themes relating to international development allowing them to implement their acquired knowledge during their internship and improve their skills by contributing to three millennium goals: children’s education protection of the environment and gender equality. In terms of employability interns increasingly developped their skills including leadership team work planning and management skills and their awareness to cultural differences. Interns received more than a dozen job offers in their field and to date six interns out of eight have found permanent or summer employment. In terms of public outreach interns increasingly improved their capacity to mobilize Canadians in different public environments promoting awareness on international development issues by each completing a minimum of two public presentations in front of an audience of 30 or more.
